There are a number of great organizations that I have worked with or am connected to in some way.  I’ve tried to list coalitions and networks that include many of these groups.  There are many more great groups that I still need to add, but this is a start. I encourage you to check them out below.

musicians, family connections & more

Appalachia
Highlander Research and Education Center — bringing together people and organizations to support social change in the South and Appalachia since 1932.
Appalachian Alliance — a regional alliance including many amazing community groups with the goals of ending the devastating practice of mountaintop removal coal mining.
Appalshop — a multi-disciplinary arts and education center that has been documenting Appalachian culture and society since 1968.
Climate Ground Zero — An ongoing campaign of non-violent civil disobedience in southern West Virginia to end mountaintop removal coal mining and its effects on our future.
Portrait Story Project – a great project documenting hundreds of activists fighting MTR.  Their site also has an extensive list of Appalachian Groups

Southeast
Southern Energy Network –  building and facilitating a youth-led movement for a clean, just, safe, and sustainable energy future that I helped found.
Stop Cliffside Coalition –a bunch of NC and regional groups working together to fight Cliffside coal plant expansion in Western NC, near where I grew up.
SC Says No! – a coalition of SC groups opposing Pee Dee Coal Plant in SC.  They won victory in 2009 when “The Santee Cooper Board of Directors unanimously voted to suspend permitting of the Pee Dee Plant”
Project South — Project South helped coordinate the US Social Forum in Atlanta in 2007 and acts as a regional hub for leadership development, movement-building, and long-term strategy development within community-based organizing for racial and economic justice.

Oregon/West Coast:
Rural Organizing Project — an Oregon-wide organization of locally-based groups that work to create communities accountable to a standard of human dignity.
Western States Center — building a progressive movement for social, economic, racial and environmental justice in the eight western states.
Center on Race, Poverty and the Environment –providing legal and technical assistance to the Environmental Justice Movement.  They took on the case of Kivalina, AK, which was melting into the sea against 20+ polluting nations & more.

Nationally/Internationally
Energy Action Coalition — an awesome youth-led coalition of more than 50 organizations working to create a clean energy future that I helped to found.
Nuclear Information and Resource Service — has been involved in fighting new nuclear power since 1978 through information and action.
Rising Tide — a grassroots network of groups and individuals who take direct action to confront the roots causes of climate change and promote local, community-based solutions to the climate crisis.
Avaaz – a global web movement with a simple democratic mission: to close the gap between the world we have, and the world most people everywhere want.
